Greetings from Cow Creek,
Hello once again and welcome to my ramblings of the going’s on around Cow Creek and the great State of Texas. We’re in the middle of October and it feels more like June and summer seems reluctant to surrender to fall. There has been good rain in the area, but it has neglected to fall on us. The pond that Ruth built for her ducks has been bone dry for several weeks. She lost some ducks to a pack of roving dogs recently so let me issue a fair warning to those dogs. This is something Ruth will not tolerate and she is a darned good shot!
I have been so busy since the 1 st of September that I have hardly been at home at all. We did our annual Labor Day show at The House Pasture Cattle Company on the banks of the Frio River in Concan, then flew out to Lubbock to participate in the 1 st ever reunion of “The Fabulous Sparkles”, a band that was in continuous existence for more than 40 years. It was a thrill to see the guys again and play the tunes we used to play. I went on the weeklong trail ride of the Tejas Vaqueros and then off to Oklahoma City and Fayetteville, Arkansas. On the way home I stopped by the A-O Ranch and spent a few days riding all my horses. Only one bucked good, but once you get her going she’s just fine.
I have also been very busy doing lots of record promotions, radio and press interviews, and just “show up and be somewhere” type events, as well as my radio show that I do on Fridays from 5-7 PM on KHYI, “The Range”. I am really enjoying the radio show but it takes up lots of time in the preparation which adds to my already busy schedule. The good news is that I am getting excellent positive feedback from the audience who say they love the show.
I am so pleased to report that our new CD, “SOMETHING FOR THE TRAIL”, is being very well received. Sales are brisk and the first single, “PERFECTLY NORMAL”, stayed in the Top 10 of the Texas Music Charts for about 8 weeks. Many of the radio DJ’s I have visited declared they had adopted the song as their “theme song“. I am pleased as well with the response I’ve received from the release of the second single, “SECOND THOUGHTS”, a more sober and thought provoking song. I admit that I was not convinced it was the best selection for release as a second single, but it was the tune most played voluntarily by radio programmers, so I deferred to their superior judgment. All 14 tunes on the CD have a special meaning for me so I have to think they will have for others as well if they will just take the time to listen.
We are happy to be associated with the SMITH MUSIC GROUP who have taken on the “SOMETHING FOR THE TRAIL” project and are doing an outstanding job of distributing and promoting it. Their main outlets are Wal-Mart, Hastings and Best Buy who have become huge players in the retail record business which gives us the opportunity to be available in any city in Texas. They are also busy with a “Taking Texas to the Country” program (my description) designed to promote Texas Music and make it available nationwide. This is all new territory and it is so good to witness the growth of Texas Music as this is what I have always dreamed of and worked for.
On the home front, Ruth, I get the idea, is cooking up some new construction project, in addition to the most excellent food she serves on her dinner table. For those of you who don’t know, Ruth is from Switzerland, so I get to enjoy the most excellent Swiss, French, German, and Italian food usually accompanied by a bottle of good Texas wine. The story of how we got acquainted and ended up getting married is an interesting one but I will save that for another day. The point is, I got lucky. My friends tell me I married up, and I can’t disagree. She has a “I can do anything I put my mind to attitude” that I admire greatly and she is a tremendous inspiration to me.
Son Julian is immersed in campus life at Texas State University and making good grades.. He is playing rugby that he got acquainted with at Camp Stewart for Boys where he is a counselor during the summer. Many of his co-counselors are from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and play rugby. He’s really quite good at it and his team are so successful TSU wants them to be official TSU Bobcats.
Son Luken is still in Nashville and just landed a good job in the “whole foods” business. I’ve been working on him to come back to Texas which I think he would like to do, but right now this new job has him occupied and could possibly provide great opportunities for advancement.
I’m about to run out of space but I wanted to catch you all up on the latest news. I am enjoying traveling and performing more than ever so I don’t intend to quite anytime soon even though other business opportunities are presenting themselves. Learning to play the guitar is a new challenge after all these years and gets most of my creative attention. It’s something I always wanted to do but there was always some excellent guitar player around, so I would end up being the utility “back up” man. The piano is what has really been missing in my life, but there doesn’t ever seems to be room for it, so the guitar has taken its place. It’s a lot of fun, but it doesn’t come easy for me, but I am making progress.
