Recording at Loma Ranch Studio in Fredericksburg, and at Cedar Creek Studio in Austin, Nunn and producer Lloyd Maines - another Texas music legend - pulled together a talented group of musicians for the long-awaited album. Nunn's distinctive vocal style sets the energetic tone for the CD, belting out the title cut, "It's A Texas Thing," and other upbeat numbers, and expressively crooning the ballads and love songs, such as "First Things First."
"I think it's the best thing I've ever done," says Gary P. from his home spread, the A-O Ranch. The title cut, "It's A Texas Thing," is familiar to radio listeners as the new theme song for Lone Star Beer. The album also includes a song that Nunn says is "the first song I ever wrote - me and a couple of buddies of mine - back in 1968." The song is called "First Forget," and was included on the CD at the suggestion of producer Lloyd Maines. "Lloyd said it was real commercial and radio-friendly. I just thought it sounded old-timey."
Other tracks on the CD showcase the talents of well-known Texas tunesmiths, and Gary P. Nunn continues his tradition of recording rising Texas songwriters such as Thomas Michael Riley and Mike Blakely.
Gary P. plays bass guitar and keyboards on the album, while producer Lloyd Maines plays guitar, steel guitar and dobro. Other musicians include Rile Osbourn on piano, keyboards and organ; Paul Pearcy on drums; Mike Broussard on drums; Bart Trotter on fiddle; Brendon Guzman on accordion; Kenny Grimes on electric guitar; and Mark Foshee on electric guitar.
Gary P. Nunn's career dates back to the 1960's and 70's with bands such as the Fabulous Sparkles and The Lost Gonzo Band. Recording and performing under his own name since 1980, Nunn has become a crowd favorite in Texas and beyond, touring relentlessly with his "Sons of the Bunkhouse Band."
As a songwriter Nunn has scored hits with Willie Nelson, Roseanne Cash, Michael Martin Murphey, David Allen Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker and many others, and has earned several gold records. His Texas standard, "London Homesick Blues" a.k.a. "Home With The Armadillo" has served as the theme song of the P.B.S. live television musical showcase "Austin City Limits" for over 20 years. |
