Greetings from Cow Creek,
Hello, Dillo-Heads, once again
from the beautiful Texas Hill Country. It’s so good to be back
in Texas, but I must admit I miss my horses and cows
and all the critters on the ranch, and the outdoor
activities that go along with that lifestyle. I’ll
always be a “Cowboy at Heart”! The ranch
is still for sale, but we are getting some serious
interest from potential buyers.
It will be a bitter sweet occasion if and when it
ever happens, as it will be the end of the dream
I’ve always had of having a “kids farm” there,
where we would take troubled and disadvantage kids
and put them together with senior volunteer mentors,
and just keep them busy growing gardens and orchards,
raising animals and producing their own food and
learning “life” skills. “DEVELOP
HUMAN ENERGY” would be the theme. Of course
it always depended on me getting a giant “hit
record” or striking oil on the place. We’re
doing okay but we’re talking “trial lawyer
money” or “government grants”!
Speaking of doing okay, our latest CD, “SOMETHNG
FOR THE TRAIL” is really catching on, while
the “WHAT I LIKE ABOUT TEXAS” CD continues
to be the best seller. The new band is working out
great. I haven’t had so much fun since the
days of the Sparkles or the Lost Gonzo Band. The
band consists of Gary Herman on bass, Treavor Labonte,
on lead guitar, and Ed Miles on drums. They are all
really good players with great attitudes, work ethic,
and they just love to go out and play good music.
Joe C., our sound tech and road manager also contributes
tremendously with his many skills. It’s taken
us since the 1st of the year to get settled with
the tunes and each other, but we’re at the
point now where I feel the confidence to get in the
studio and record another CD. I’m writing a
few songs and have collected a great group of tunes
out of Nunn Publishing Co. that I am anxious to record.
They are road tested and have all passed the test.
This will be number 14, which is something I never
dreamed of, but if you just take one step forward
after another, after time you will have “covered
some ground“.
The music business in Texas has gone through tremendous
growth in the last few years with lots of young talent
coming on the scene, but I proud to say that “we’re
holding our own” and making progress! People
say, “how is it going”? I tell them it’s
like driving from Texas to Santa Fe, NM. It seems
like your traveling on flat ground, but when you
get there you realize that you’re a “mile
high“!
The family is all good. Ruthie has just completed
a huge porch, deck and hot tub project on to our
new house. She always has some construction project
going on. She orders the materials, she measures
it, she saws it, and she “screws it down”.
All I do is haul the materials. She has taken up “paddling”.
She and her neighbor friend acquired some river boats
at Rockin’ R River rides in Gruene, Texas,
and spend their early morning hours exploring the
upper reaches of Lake Travis all the way to the dam
in Marble Falls. She’s developed a great tan
and I don’t arm wrestle her any more!
Julian just turned 20 and is a junior at Texas State.
He’s still doing really good in school and
playing rugby. He spent a couple of months this summer
doing construction work on the island of Hawaii which
was a real learning experience for him. Big brother,
Lukin, is still in Nashville and working for an internet “Whole
Foods-type” store. People e-mail in their orders,
and they deliver them. He’s also writing songs
and has made a couple of CD’s featuring the
ukulele which he plays very nicely. I’m trying
to get him to move back to Texas as I sure miss not
being able to spend more time with him and grandson,
Sylas T. Nunn and his mom, Amanda, who has become
a recording engineer. Sylas skipped Camp Stewart
this past summer but I think he’ll be back.
Hey, I’m getting carried away, but I always
do!
Earlier this year I had the pleasure to produce a
CD titled, “I’M READY”, for a
talented and good-looking young band out of Denison,
Texas, known as “SPUR 503”, and I invite
you to keep and eye out for them and “check ’em
out”. I particularly like their song, “I
was born a Texan,---That’s what’s wrong
with me”. Producing is something I’ve
been anxious to get involved in since I repatriated
to Texas. I’ve done lots of unofficial producing
in my time and the results have had longevity, which
leads to me to believe I may have a knack for it.
It’s the same with my publishing company. I’ve
had flurry of requests lately by record companies,
television and movie production companies for the
use of songs in the Nunn Publishing Catalogue. “LONDON
HOMESICK BLUES” aired this past week in the
pilot for the TV series, “SURFACE”.
It takes time, but they do come around.
ROADTRIP/SEA-CRUISE ALERT!
“Baby, let me take you on a,…..Sea-Cruise”!
We are getting really exited about the “GARY
