Newsletter Fall 2006

Greetings from Cow Creek,

The seasons are changing and that’s always my reminder that I need to touch base and catch you all up on the comings and goings around here. I just got off a run that lasted for 33 days of having somewhere to go and something to do that included a trip to Terlingua for the Chili Cook-Off by way of Bandera for the Hunter’s Ball, then to South Padre Island to play in the South Texas Senior Pro-Am Golf Tournament and a day of fishing on Laguna Madre. Like Hondo Crouch used to always say, “having fun can be hard work, sometimes!” We did have fun. The Boys in the Bunkhouse enjoyed it and did a great job at all the shows we played.

Business has been really picking up for us, as we have had some record crowds lately. I have to ask, “hey, what’s going on tonight that this place is so packed?”. I am pleased to get the response, “they’re here to see you!” “Makes me feel soooo good!” We had a sellout show at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene on a Thursday. I pulled out a grand piano from behind the curtains and played it during the show and it seemed to really go over well. People tell me I need to bring the piano back into the show and I think it’s time I did just that. After all, piano and bass are my true instruments, though I have been enjoying learning to play the guitar. “I’m the jack of all trades, I’m the master of none”. Remember that song from the UNDER MY HAT CD? I need to pull it out and add it back to my song list.

The band has really gelled nicely and we are enjoying what seems to be a new excitement for what we’re doing. Our friends in Texas Radio have stayed with us as radio airplay just keeps increasing. New outlets such as what is now Willie’s Place on XM Satellite Radio have added us to their play lists. Thanks to you all for requesting our tunes and I hope you will continue to do so. Record sales are good as all titles are moving with the “GREATEST HITS I” leading the pack. We appreciate your going to the garypnunn.com website and ordering our products via PayPal. This has increased our sales significantly.

I am so pleased to announce that I have been chosen as a finalist by the TEXAS COMMISSION ON THE ARTS as a nominee for TEXAS STATE ARTIST! This will be voted on by the Texas Legislature in January. I would be extremely honored if I am fortunate enough to be selected. I want to thank all of you who voted for me and wrote to the Commission on my behalf. I always say, “it’s not so much what you do, but what others do for you, that makes the difference in a life or a career”.

All in the family are doing well. Ruthie P. Nunn is doing great and working hard with our agency, Austin Universal Entertainment, to keep us busy with great gigs, as well as being the best cook in Burnet County! Her Swiss background makes our menu have a European flavor. She could run a great restaurant, but I’m not willing to part with her to cook for others. Ya’ll will just have to wrangle an invitation to one of her fabulous dinner parties!

Number one son Lukin is still in Nashville writing songs and working his way up in a startup Whole Foods type grocery and restaurant company called Plum Good Food. I hear it’s really a great place, so any of you in the Nashville area go check them out. His son Sylas, age 10, is in a honors student program, and has taken up the tenor saxophone. From all accounts, he shows great talent. He probably got it from his Gee-Paw! Gee-Paw took him skiing at Taos Ski Valley and got him started. He’s a natural! Julian is 21 and a senior at Texas State University. He’s majoring in Business Management and Finance. We received a very nice letter from one of his professors who said he shows great potential. He’ll be looking for a job soon, so I may send him your way. We’re real proud of all our boys.

This year has just flown by and I have been flying by the “seat of my pants”, but that’s the way it’s always been. I have so much to be thankful for and so little to complain about. We will finish out the holiday season with a flourish at the COWBOY CHRISTMAS BALL on Dec. 23 at Luckenbach, Texas, which is always a special occasion, and………………….

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Look below for a list of hotels nearby. We are pleased to have on board our radio sponsors, OUTLAW RADIO 92.5, and KJ-97, the two biggest stations in San Antonio. Please order your advance tickets now to insure they are available. We invite all our friends in the Texas Hill Country and around the state and nation to join us for this very special New Year’s Eve Celebration!

Until then, thank you all for your friendship and support. Visit our website for a list of our upcoming dates, plan a road trip and come share the joys of our precious Texas music and lifestyle. I love it and don’t intend to retire any time soon. I promise I’ll get a new CD out at the earliest possible opportunity. God bless us all and pray for our troops who risk their lives in war that we may live in peace! Your friend for life,

Gary P. Nunn and family
