Greetings from Cow Creek,
Thanks to God we have received blessed rains and
the Texas hill country is aglow with bluebonnets
and green grass! Lake Travis is back to near normal
levels after being down 40 feet. It has been cool
and I actually had to drive through a blinding snowstorm
on my way to Dallas on April 7th…….Texas
weather……if you don’t like it,
just wait.
We have been busy. Ruth is constructing a new chicken
house which will be quite elegant when finished.
She’s off right now fetching a batch of new
chicks, all females. We have an abundance of roosters
so she needs to create more of a balance, otherwise,
the hens have to do extra duty. One might think we
could put some of the roosters in the frying pan,
but that doesn’t go over too well. I have a
saying around here, “We don’t eat’em,
we just feed’em:!
I am pleased to announce that during the SOUTH BY
SOUTHWEST MUSIC FESTIVAL, I was presented with a
proclamation from Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas,
designating Gary P. Nunn as THE AMBASSADOR OF TEXAS
MUSIC! I was proud, and humbled to be recognized
in such a manner. It has always been my purpose to
promote Texas and the Texas Music Industry whose
growth in the last few years, no one can deny, has
been substantial and even phenomenal. If I have contributed,
even in some small way, to that growth and development,
I am proud of that.
We have had some great shows and trips already this
year. In late March we had the opportunity to travel
to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, an exotic city
dating back 400 years to the Spanish colonial days.
We performed for the most beautiful wedding reception
and kept the entire party on the dance floor the
entire evening. Thanks to Courtney and Jaime, the
handsome couple who tied the knot, and their families
for treating us so special with their hospitality
and generosity. The next day, we played for the 1st
San Miguel City Limits Music Festival. Five hundred
American residents of San Miguel attended, ate Texas
Barbeque, danced the Texas Two-Step, and a good time
was apparently had by all. There’s a good chance
this may become an annual event which would be an
excellent “roadtrip” opportunity in the
future.
We got to close down the HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND
RODEO at the Astrodome, where we had 10,000 in attendance.
That has to be some kind of record for a country
dance, and certainly a milestone for the Sons of
the Bunkhouse Band. It was definitely a “western” situation.
We want to thank our Tejas Vaqueros Amigos for making
it possible for us to be the band for that special
night.
Another very special event is scheduled for Saturday,
August 4th, at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas! Jeff
Mack, a film and video producer from Dallas, approached
me about a year ago about doing a special concert
with a lineup of seminal Texas artists. I am happy
to announce that through much perseverance, negotiations,
arranging of schedules, etc., that the event is officially
booked and scheduled to take place. It will be filmed
and recorded with state-of-the-art equipment, and
a DVD will be produced from the show. The lineup
includes MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY, GARY P. NUNN, RUSTY
WEIR, and BILL & BONNIE HEARNE with MIKE HEARNE
and SXSW. This will truly be a one-of-a kind show
the likes of which hasn’t happened in many
years and probably will never happen again. The resulting
DVD will be a rare historical document that you have
the opportunity to witness live and in person! Go
to www.liveatthemajestic.com for information and
tickets. For advance tickets and reservations, go
to web.mack.com/yasgur. Make your plans now to spend
an evening in Dallas with us for this very special
event. This is very exciting. With cameras rolling,
you never know who might show up!
Later in August we are off to France to perform at
a huge Country Music Festival, which includes a real
live rodeo. We have picked up dates in Germany, Austria,
and Switzerland. The boys in the Bunkhouse Band will
be able to see some countryside. Ruth will be our
tour guide and translator and we will be able to
visit with her family there, which we haven’t
had the opportunity to do since Julian was a toddler.
Speaking of Julian, he’s not a toddler any
more. He will be graduating from Texas State University
this summer with a degree in Business Management
and Finance. His rugby team just returned from Colorado
where they competed in a regional tournament. They
were defeated by the team that became national champions.
Julian is looking for an internship this summer so
if anyone needs one, he comes highly recommended,
if I do say so. His mother raised him well. In the
meantime, he is marketing high-end cutlery by special
appointment for a part time job, so he asked me to
put out the word. He needs the money. Give us a shout
and we’ll put you together.
Son Lukin has settled in to life in Nashville, where
he grew up for the most part. He’s still writing
and recording and working for Plum Good Food. He
has moved to the kitchen where they prepare gourmet
food for special events. I tell him to learn as much
as he can about cooking. I’ve always thought
about having a nice restaurant-music venue, when
I give up the road. We could have a family business.
I would take care of the PR and BS. His boy, Silas
T. Nunn, is 10 now. He’s taken up the tenor
sax. I sent him CD’s of The Bill Doggett Combo,
Junior Walker and the All-Stars, and “The Champs“.
From these he can learn “Honky Tonk”, “Night
Train”, and “Tequila”, all classic
tenor sax tunes, and a college education in the instrument.
He appears to have real natural talent and a good “ear”.
I’m real proud of all my boys.
It’s time for me to wrap this taco up and put
it away. Ya’ll come see me every chance you
get. Visit us at garypnunn.com, leave us a note on
the guest book, visit the Bunkhouse Products store
where we are having a “spring sale” on
T-shirts. You come to one of our shows and I’ll
introduce you to the best people you could ever hope
to meet in your life. Bring a special friend with
you and we’ll do our best to make sure they
have a “big as Texas” good time. A special
thanks to our most loyal of fans, Dudley and Jeane,
Will and Till, Danny and Becky, and others too numerous
to mention. I’m cranking up the record making
process and beginning work on a new project. I just
read the most interesting book, that I highly recommend
to anyone who has the least bit interest in how this
wonderful nation of ours got started. It is a biography
of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. This book should
be required reading in our public schools, but unfortunately
that’s not likely to happen. In the meantime,
pray for our soldiers, sailors, and marines, who
go in harm’s way, while we go to the mall.
God bless Texas, God bless America, and God bless
us every one.
Gary P. Nunn
