Greetings from Cow Creek,
It’s good to be back with you. It’s been a very busy spring. We had a chance to get away to Taos, NM. for a ski vacation. The snow was fantastic and the weather was beautiful. It was good to get back up that way and I’m happy to say my skiing skills have not diminished. We ran into our great friend and songwriter/performer Michael Hearne. They were having a reunion of the GREAT AMERICAN HONKY TONK BAND in Red River. They were the house band at the MOTHER LODE for many years and backed me up on the AUSTIN CITY LIMITS show we recorded back when. It became the HOME WITH THE ARMADILLO-LIVE AT AUSTIN CITY LIMITS album. It brought back many good memories of the times I spent there. The dancers there are something special. Many thanks to STEVE and PRICILLA HEGLUND at the Mother Lode and JEAN MAYER at the St Bernard-Taos Ski Valley and the TROY family for your generous hospitality. Looking forward to coming back soon.
As I said, we’ve been very busy since the 1st of the year. We did 7 shows at the Houston Rodeo, featuring another packed house at the HIDEOUT…rode in the Grand Entry a couple of times and ran into many Vaquero Amigos… were invited to the DIRECTORS CLUB at RELIANT STADIUM and made lots of new friends. Houston has been very good to me.
The highlight of the spring was our trip to France. We performed at BILLY BOB’S at EURODISNEY to a jammed house…then caught a train west to the Brittany province where they greeted us with a chorus of AA-OO‘s! We played to an excited sold out crowd. Their passion is country music and line dancing which they do extraordinarily well…800 people line dancing can be a beautiful thing. They treated us to a day-trip to the coastal city of St. Malo, a fortified city that repelled many naval attacks from the British back in history…a very interesting and enjoyable trip. There were 20 cameras on us the whole day. I want to send my heartfelt thanks to the WESTRENNES COUNTRY DANCE CLUB. Please relay this to all your members so they will know how much we enjoyed our time there. You hear so much about how the French don’t like Americans. I found just the opposite to be true. During the luncheon they served us, we had a harmonica playing session. I can’t play, but they coaxed me…the only tune I could come up with was the STAR SPANGELED BANNER…when I played it they stood up and saluted…I was touched. We can’t wait to return. MERCI BEAUCOUP!!!
We finally got back into the studio for a new CD project. You live for the chance to get in there and try out things you have stored up. The BOYS IN THE BUNKHOUSE are doing a great job, and they are such a pleasure to work with. Check out the MySpace site…GARYPNUNNOFFICIAL for photos of the band…We’ve gone “lean and mean” four-piece for our live shows and the audience response says it all…I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had in my life of playing music.
‘08’ was a record year for merchandise sales. The latest release, “LIVE AT MAJESTIC THEATRE” CD is doing great. I’m proud of the excellent quality of the performance, the recording, and the tireless work of producer JEFF MACK, who put his life, fortune, and sacred honor into this project. If you don’t have a copy of it, I urge you to get one! It’s the only CD that contains “ADIOS AMIGO”, which has become a standard favorite…especially for the ladies. Meanwhile, the “WHAT I LIKE ABOUT TEXAS” CD is still the best seller! I can’t keep them in stock, I’m happy to say. THANKS TO YA’LL…………
The family is “all good”. Ruthie P. Nunn gets up with the chickens and stays busy cooking and baking and making our home in the hill country beautiful, and caring for me and her other animals. She inherited a “ferret” and a couple of “sugar gliders” from son Julian when he moved to Houston to take a new job. She talks to them as if they were her children…and like her children, sometimes they get a good “cussin” in her native Swiss tongue…..scare me!!
Son Lukin is still in Nashville…working for WHOLE FOODS…which is cool as I used to hang out with the guys who started that company. Grandson Sylas T. Nunn, is excelling in school, playing baseball and tenor sax. The other day, he called and said since his folks all played guitars and wrote songs that he thinks he should do it too. I went down to HEART OF TEXAS MUSIC and arranged for him a Classic Vibe “1960’s reissue Stratocaster”. He paid for it with money he had saved. I should encourage him to be a doctor, or lawyer, or such……
Well, I’m running out of space and time, so I better wrap this up. You may expect more frequent short notes from me with news updates and upcoming shows. Let me say, if you don’t care to receive these, just forward this back to me expressing your wishes and I will gladly remove you from the mailing list. I am just happy to be able to share with you our comings and goings and small accomplishments as I consider you all to be “friends for life”… also, to thank you for your loyalty and support through the years. Visit us at the “garypnunn.com” homepage, or at the MySpace site, “garypnunnofficial“….and I understand we have a FaceBook site as well…I can’t keep up, but I’m told it’s the way of the world. Check out the BUNKHOUSE PRODUCTS STORE for all our CD’s and merchandise, and the ROAD DATES page for a schedule of our shows. Till next time, I’ll see ya down the trail……AA-OO and Adios Amigos!
