Greetings from Cow Creek,
Summer time is here and things
are really heating up. Perhaps you heard the news
that we’ve had serious floods in our area
recently. Nineteen inches of rain fell in one night.
The area lake levels are at record high levels.
Fortunately we’re high and dry and weren’t
adversely affected. However many in our area are
devastated. We pray for those who have suffered
from this tragedy.
We continue to stay busy with
a full schedule, and there’s plenty to keep
us occupied keeping this “show on the road”.
I am recovering from case of cracked ribs. I’ve
had very few injuries in my life but this one really
laid me low for a while. I lost some sleep but
fortunately, I didn’t miss a single gig.
You gotta be tough to wear the “A-O Brand”.
Ruth is finishing up her fancy
new “chicken condo”. She covered it
with cedar shingles. When I went to the lumbar
yard to buy them, the clerk asked me what that
were for? When I told him, he responded that, “you’re
going to have to sell a lot of eggs to pay for
these shingles”. Anyone who needs any fresh
eggs just drop by, but they’re not cheap!
We finally got in the studio and recorded “ADIOS
AMIGO”.. a great new song written by my cowboy
buddy, Martin Fuller. Lloyd Maines produced it
doing his normal outstanding job. I have been performing
it for some time with tremendous audience response
and lots a demand for a recording of it! So, here’s
the deal! I’m going to release it as a single
to radio stations and make it available for downloading
from my website while I finish a CD of new songs.
I’ve managed to write a few, finishing up
things that have been rattling around in my head
for years. I needed to get them out and finished…… kind
of like “spring cleaning”. I’m
really excited about the prospects for this new
project and this song in particular. The response
has just been so overwhelmingly positive I’m
thinking I may have a chance to get a “hit” out
of this one. I’ll send out a notice when
it is available and I hope you all will take the
opportunity to download it and enjoy it till I
finish the new CD. This will be my first venture
into the internet marketing process which is no
doubt the “wave of the future“.
Thanks to all of you who have sent along your congratulations
regarding Gov. Rick Perry’s proclaiming me
the “AMBASSADOR OF TEXAS MUSIC”. This
is quite a humbling experience and I am truly honored.
Since then I have been approached about writing
a book about my life in the music business. I was
fortunate to have been involved in the Texas Music
Scene from its seminal days and have had a ring
side seat in watching it grow and develop. One
day I’m going to just sit down and start
writing, so we’ll see what becomes of that.
All you need is time, time, time, and an un-cluttered
mind.
We have lots of special events coming up. One that
I am particularly excited about is the show at
the MAJESTIC THEATER in Dallas on August, 4th.
This will be the first of a Texas Music Legends
Series to be filmed and recorded “live”,
using “state of the art digital equipment”.
It will made into a DVD and a TV special! The lineup
includes MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY, GARY P. NUNN,
RUSTY WEIR, and BILL AND BONNIE HEARNE with MICHAEL
HEARNE and SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST!!! Tickets are available
at TICKETMASTERS. I encourage you all to make a
special evening out of it and join us for this
unique and historic event! You could end up in
the DVD. See enclosed ad for this show!
Later in August we are off to France to perform
at the “EQUIBLUES WESTERN FESTIVAL” …one
of the largest Country Music Festivals in Europe.
We’re all ready to “get the hell out
of Texas” and having the opportunity to share
our music with the country music fans in Europe.
We intend to take some time and see some sites
and soak up some of the “culture” while
over there. However, everybody knows that you “can’t
really get the hell out of Texas”!
We just confirmed a date I’m
really excited about. We will be performing at
the STATE FAIR OF TEXAS at 5:30 pm on Sunday, Oct.
7th, at the CHEVROLET MAIN STAGE! This is the day
after the TEXAS-OKLAHOMA football game, so make
your plans to be with us. I have lots of kin folk
in Oklahoma so I can’t really take sides. “GO
HORNS”
We filmed our last show in front
of a “packed house” at Blanco’s
Bar & Grill, the “Broken Spoke of River
Oaks” in Houston. “Texas Roadhouse
Live” came by to shoot an interview with
me for another show they are putting together,
and ended up filming the evening at Blanco’s.
I haven’t seen the footage yet, but I’m
looking forward to it. Of course, our many friends
and fans in the Houston area, including my Tejas
Vaqueros amigos, were there and will no doubt appear
in the video as well. I’m thinking this could
be a quintessential evening with the Bunkhouse
Band and I intend to make a DVD out of the recorded
footage.
The LOST GONZO BAND REUNION show
at the Kerrville Folk Festival was rained out and
called because of lightening. This was very disappointing
as we had most of the original members on hand:
Bob Livingston, John Inmon, Kelly Dunn came in
from California, Paul Pearcy, and Lloyd Maines,
were all there and ready to go. There was lots
of excitement in anticipation of that show. The
Lost Gonzo Band was one of the greatest bands to
ever come out of Texas and had tremendous influence
on the creation of the Texas Music industry, with
their contributions back then. It was from those
days that the “senderos were cut through
the brush“, paving the way for the young
artists that are making such a splash today.
On the family front, everyone
is doing good. Ruthie is working on a secret project.
She won’t let me say what it is. Son Julian
is graduating in August from TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY.
Great God in heaven, where does the time go? The
last time I looked, he was toddler on the beach
at Padre Island. He plans on working for some time
before he commits to an area to specialize in for
graduate school. Son Lukin is still in Nashville
and working in the food business and writing songs
on the side. His boy, Silas is out for the summer
and we’re planning to have him out for a
vacation. G-Paw intends to take him to Concan,
Tx. and spend a few days floating the Frio River
and playing golf at the beautiful new CONCAN COUNTRY
CLUB. I might even take him to Mexico. A young
man needs to get around and see the world. Oh,
by the way, we’ll be in Concan for our annual
Labor Day show at the HOUSE PASTURE on Sept. 1st;
another choice Texas Roadtrip opportunity. Call
FRIO COUNTRY for reservations at their excellent
river side condo facilities and we’ll see
you there.
Have you seen the slide show/video
on “you tube” that’s been going
around? Jeremy Oldham put together an excellent
piece of work of Texas images while “WHAT
I LIKE ABOUT TEXAS” is playing in the background.
It’s really good and is logging thousands
of “hits”! Feel free to forward it
to your friends when you get the notion to spread
a little “Texas Love” around. Go to
garypnunn.com or to my “myspace” address,
garypnunnofficial to see the video.
All in all, things are going
good. I’ve taken a few bumps and bruises
but that’s all part of life. I just get up
and start putting one foot in front of the other
and stay focused on keeping it “between the
ditches”. Thanks to all of you for your support
and friendship. Welcome to all newcomers to the
mailing list and I hope you will all become our “friends
for life”. Speaking of friends, thanks to
all of you who have contacted us on “myspace”.
Visit as well at garypnunn.com , check out the “road
dates” schedule, drop a line in the “guest
book“, and visit the “products store“.
By the way, product sales have spiked recently,
and we thank ya’ll for that. We keep messin’ around,
we’re gonna make the big time! Someone said
to me recently, “hell Jeepster, I thought
you were big time”! Well, I’m starting
to ramble and my ribs are beginning to ache, so
I’m going to sign off here and wish you all
a great and safe summer. Come on down to one of
our shows and say hello. God bless us all and pray
for peace. Until next time, I will remain,
Your friend for life,
Gary P. Nunn
