NEWSLETTER WINTER 2011

GREETINGS FROM COW CREEK,

The seasons are changing and that’s my cue to touch base with you to keep you informed of the comings and goings of Gary P. Nunn and family, as well as news concerning our musical journeys. It’s been a brutally hot summer. It’s just past Thanksgiving and only now beginning to feel like fall. You are all aware of the general state of the economy and I don’t have to tell you about that, but the good news is we’re managed to hold our own during these tough times. The great Leonard Cohen once told me when I was feeling down, “hang in there, success is survival”. We do survive.

HOME, HOME ON THE RANGE

Everything here at the A-O is humming along just fine. Ruth keeps us busy and keeps y’all informed about what’s going on at the website, www.garypnunn.com and on facebook. Please check out the new Gary P. Nunn PAGE on facebook that Ruth has created for posts of all the new happenings.

PICKING AND GRINNING WITH OLD FRIENDS

This has been a busy year. It seems like we’ve played a record number of shows. Attendance at our regular venues has been overflowing, and we’ve added several new rooms to our itinerary and looking forward to returning to these and building up a following like we have at so many. Also, I have been doing some single performances. One of note just recently was in Abilene, a benefit for the Ben Richey Boys Ranch. I shared the stage with a two of my favorite Texas songwriters and musicians, Joe Ely and Leroy Parnell. The show sold out in 1 hour and could have sold it out twice they said. The show was a huge success for a very worthy cause. It was great to hear Joey sing his great songs, and hear Leroy sing and play that fantastic slide guitar. We stay up most of the night telling stories of the early days in Lubbock and Austin. “Didn’t we have us a ball”?

NEW YEAR’S EVE

TRIBUTE TO THE LOST GONZO BAND AT MUSICFEST

The first week in January Ruth and I are off to MUSICFEST in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for skiing and performing at this awesome annual music festival that has become one of the premier festivals in the country! This year’s honoree is non-other than the LOST GONZO BAND! For those of you who may not be that familiar with my history, this is the band I worked with back in the 70’s when this whole Texas Music genre came in to being. We were the band that backed up Michael Martin Murphey, and Jerry Jeff Walker, as well as recording 3 LP’s for MCA and Capitol Records. We played on many of the early records that gave the country its first taste of Texas Music. Some give us credit for having been instrumental in giving birth to the movement and nurturing it till it could stand on its own. So we are being recognized for our contributions, and will be doing a reunion performance during the festival. Other festival artists will be performing Gonzo Band songs. Original members Bob Livingston, John Inmon, Kelly Dunn, and myself will be there as well as drummer Paul Pearcy who came on board later.

LIKE NUNN OTHER…..GARY P. TAKES TEXAS TO THE COUNTRY

I want to call your attention to an article that just appeared in the very classy magazine publication, “TEXASLIVE”. My friends Clover and Rachel Carroll, better known for the moment, in association with their western swing act, “BACK AT THE RANCH”, are contributing writers for “TEXASLIVE”. Also, they produce a TV program for “TEXAS LIVE NETWORK” about Texas musicians and artists. They brought their video crew over to Cow Creek and filmed an interview with me. The gist of that interview appeared in print in the November 2011 edition of the magazine. I was so pleased with the way it turned out. In my opinion, it is the most comprehensive and insightful piece ever done about me. I encourage you to get the magazine and view this article. You may read the article posted at www.garypnunn.com under “News”. Thanks to Clover and Rachel for an excellent job.

IT’S OKAY……I’M WITH THE BAND?

Many of you have inquired about obtaining a ‘band ranch jacket’, like the boys in the band wear. I have acquired and had embroidered with the band logo on the back, a limited supply of these jackets, and am offering them through the Bunkhouse Products Store at the website. They are Carhart jackets with a thin blanket lining that make them perfect for cool weather, but will keep you warm when it gets cold. We have lady’s sizes in turquoise and rose colors, very cool: men’s in traditional camel tan as well as black. These are quality jackets that will last a lifetime. You too, like so many others, can claim that you were in the “Sons of The Mother Loving Bunkhouse Band”, and no one can prove differently.

MY WAY…….IS THE HIGHWAY

I calculated the other day that I have personally driven nearly 2 million miles since I took out on my own in 1980 following the breakup of the LOST GONZO BAND. Haven’t slowed down a bit and don’t intend to. I’m always anxious to have another opportunity to win over new fans to our kind of music. We have another trip to France scheduled next March. I’m looking forward to going back over with the new band and sharing our music with our many friends and fans there. They greet us with a Texas size “AAAAAA-OOOOOOO” when we arrive. In the meantime we have busy schedule taking us through Dec., and early next year is filling up rapidly with several shows associated with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Makes me want to say Yee-Haa!

IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME IN TEXAS

Well, it’s time for me to hit the trail. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of those who remembered my birthday on the facebook page. I’m really moved by the number of you who did that. I had just as soon forget, but thank you so much. Of course Christmas is upon us, so I’ll wish you all the Happiest of Christmases! Remember, I have the “IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME IN TEXAS” CD available by mail order from our BUNKHOUSE PRODUCTS Store, as well as all my products. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to Christmas shop there and find something that will make a great present for someone on your list…..even yourself! We can have it in your hands in just a few days. I thank you all, as well, for the friendship and support you give. It goes without saying that I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without it. Our family is doing well and I hope yours is too. Have a great holiday season. Come see me when you can. May the Lord bless you throughout the year! Until next time, I will remain,

Your friend for life,
Gary P. Nunn
